I have a nephew who just turned 1 year old and his parents asked me to build him a busy board / activity center thing for him to play with. In this video, I show the busy board I built and discuss some of its features.
The board has a standard light switch that turns on a large, green LED. It has 2 lighted toggle switches, a large push button that lights up when pressed down, a small button that turns on a flashing LED, a bicycle bell that I damped with some glue so it wouldn’t drive people crazy, a door that opens a compartment with fake turf in the bottom, three door stops that are fun to play with, a wheel that spins, and a mirror. There is also a carrying handle on the back.
All the electronics are powered by 2 AA batteries that should last a long time because the LED’s don’t draw much power. I left the bottom panel unglued and screwed it on so that I can access the wires inside if it’s ever needed. The box was made from 1/2″ oak. I sanded the wood smooth and finished it with a couple layers of shellac. Shellac is a natural product that is easy to apply and is nontoxic and very safe once cured. In fact, it is even used as an ingredient in some candies!

Where did you buy the electronic components for this build?
A lot of the buttons and switches came from a surplus store, Axeman in St. Paul, MN, and I bought the other components from RadioShack which went out of business. Your best bet to find components will likely be a surplus store or online.
